How many satellites can we safely fit in Earth orbit?

The number is nearly unlimited. There's a LOT of space up there!

and, for the lazy: The article doesn't state a number, but speculates it will be difficult to have 100,000 satellites up there safely.

I don't think there is any fix number for that. Is it?

There is no fix. Earth orbit is a finite resource. When it is used up, that's it.
