The last 2 cell phones I replaced were battery related. Everything else worked fine.
This won't solve the problem though. They will just implement manufactures obsolescence though the software. (IE you need Android version X to use the cell networks/ software. They will make it annoying enough that you will upgrade every 2 years)

Wrestling with the idea of replacing the battery in my ancient Zenfone 2 Z00a. It is from 2015, but has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, so should still be way more than good enough.

That would be amazing.
It's about time. Phone manufacturers have been allowed to ensure their products have a tiny shelf life due to limited battery life, even go so far as to implement terms to discourage replacement such as voiding warranties should you wish to do it yourself or through an independent company.

Everyone needs to download a full battery alarm and use it to unplug their phones as soon as they get to a hundo. That's what ruins batteries and that's why a battery alarm isn't included as part of the OS. They know people will just plug in their phones at bed time and leave them plugged in and damaging the battery all night long!

This is good and all, but we still need a way to get affordable batteries from reputable manufacturers. I don't want to carry the $5 knock-off maybe-a-fireball in my pocket, thanks.

Oh dont worry, apple will make sure you cant do that, they will lock their phones so that only original batteries work in them, and only if they are registered to the specific device
