China doesn't need a weather balloon to spy, like most developed nations they've got satellites that can see down to the tiniest detail. My impression is that it was an actual weather balloon and it was blown out of proportion as propaganda.

You get better resolution at low orbit.

Agreed. If it was an actual threat the US would have blown it up long before it came close. They waited a while before blowing it up partly to avoid debris raining down on someone, but the fact they blew it up at all was basically a show of force. Granted the US is 100% in the right to blow up stuff that violates their airspace and even if the Chinese whine about how the US unnecessarily blew up a harmless weather balloon, that statement can be 100% true while also being a rediculous whine.

US blew up the balloon as a show of force, both sides are running their propaganda machines full either "Chinese send balloon to spy on us" which is stupid. Or "Mean old US popped out balloon" which is also stupid. Nobody should give a fuck about it. China has every right to blow up US balloons that violate their airspace and they would if they wanted to, US can do the same.

If that's what treason looks like - refusing to share the details of international espionage - then America has not had a non-treasonous president in its history.
