I'm starting to think the problem is less to do with left and right and more to do with those cocksure in their own virtue and self-righteousness to the point of self-stagnation.

Sadly this leads to the issue that those who are cocksure often tend to get their visions realised far more than those who are reserved and dominate the landscape.

more to do with those cocksure in their own virtue and self-righteousness to the point of self-stagnation.

This is exactly it. And I think part of it is that in this era in history, for the first time ever, we're drowning in more information than we can handle. And the way a lot of people try to figure who is correct is by who sounds the most confident, because there's not enough time to actually dig through the information and properly consider it all, because there's basically infinite information now. So it's become all about appearances.

    who sounds the most confident

This has always been the case and always will be.

    [–]ballooon 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It's also easier to find information that confirms our biases. I believe this makes us feel well-informed enough to subconsciously avoid extra information, as if we are trying to prevent overload.

    [–]Zapped 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Well said. I hadn't thought of it that way. I think the Dunning-Kruger effect only applies to the vocal followers (well, maybe some leaders). Paralysis by analysis, somewhat. Too much noise.

    [–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes the self-reflecting people are sorting through near-infinite information, while the loud people are making moves and having conviction (even if unwarranted). So the world is being gradually shaped to more reflect those who lack self-reflection, because they're the ones making moves.

Why do you care if they self-stagnate? Why is it sad? Sounds like jealousy.

If you're going to post on a post-woke internet board, the left and right is everything unless you're delusional. That's why these reddit clones exist, no?

Speaking of cocksure, self-righteous and arrogant to boot, you know Warren Buffet once was quoted as saying the following:

"I'm going to buy hamburgers the rest of my life. When hamburgers go down in price, we sing the 'Hallelujah Chorus' in the Buffett household. When hamburgers go up in price, we weep. For most people, it's the same with everything in life they will be buying — except stocks. When stocks go down and you can get more for your money, people don't like them anymore." Stagnation.

I'll bet Warren Buffet feels the same way about the problem being less to do with the left and right as well, well with all the "interests" he's responsible for consolidating. I'd much rather have a million self-righteous internet trolls than the pretentiousness of a "hallelujah singing" and "weeping" Buffet household when it comes time to wipe down the the ol' grill next season, though.

Why would I be jealous of their inability to grow as a person? They have no modicum of self-doubt or introspection, which you could argue in some ways is a positive for them in accomplishing goals, but throw them against an equally ignorant person on the other side of the debate, and they strain each other, driving themselves to insanity whilst more sensible people on the left and right distance themselves from these two.

Not to mention, these people through creating division in the citizenry create the Warren Buffets of the world and allow them to prosper.

Maybe. Sounds like a familiar slope, though.

    [–]HarryPhajynuhz 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

True, but at the moment the left is certainly the more aggressive suppressor of free speech.

What's your definition of left then? Because "woke-signaling faux fashion leftists" sure describes the entire left as far as I can tell.

I quit saying I was on the left around 2017 because it's futile. If you're not a "woke-signaling faux fashion leftist" you're casted out as a nazi.

The argument made is that all left wing power suppresses speech, not some. So your argument that some right wing power suppresses speech too really falls flat. To argue against it you either have to present left wing power that does not suppress speech or make the claim that all right wing power suppresses speech and risk being made a fool when someone presents examples of right wing power that does not suppress speech.

But realistically I think all extremist power suppresses speech, and what we are brainwashed to think is that the extreme far left is the moderate left. The mainstream has been taken over by radicals and that is proven by the way they are pushing ideas such as deplatforming (specifically that by having a conversation you give a platform to evil ideas), speech is violence (justifying violent suppression of speech), microaggressions (taking all power away from the speaker to speak non aggressively by giving anyone the power to silence them with claims that they have been aggressed regardless of what was said), and other absurd nonsense like demanding that white people not be allowed to speak at all.

This is no different then blasphemy laws, except that it literally applies to every facet of life and speech. It should not be tolerated.

Once you present that elusive positive list of non-speech-suppressing instances of rightwing power, we may move the discussion on from there.

What is the point when you don't even deny that they exist. It would be a waste of my time.

In the current discourse, people regularly mistake the "moderate" (i.e., fake) left for the far left.

What does that even mean? What moderate ideas and claims are called far left?

Here is a list of far left lunacy that is mainstream: giving hormone blockers to preteens. Gender fluidity. The idea that gender traits determine your sex. Critical race theory. Communism.

How many supporters of the recent #forcethevote initiative widely deemed "radical" are in favor of (let alone calling for) the censorship attributed to "the left" here? How many of those are Bernie-or-bust?

You seem to think that calling individual people radicals and the mainstream ideas of the left being radical are somehow the same thing. They are not. I don't give a fuck about name calling, that is a leftist thing. It is not the people being crazy that matters, it is the ideas being crazy that matters. Force the vote has nothing to do with anything, and that those people were called radicals by other leftists certainly means nothing.

Isn't it funny you'd choose a staunchly rightwing instance of speech suppression to illustrate just how bad "leftwing" speech suppression is? I find it funny... :)

It's literally the point. It's frankly concerning that you think it was unintentional.

This isn't school, I don't have to provide citations for a random schizo on the internet.

Blasphemy laws don't exist in the US. They have them in the UK because leftist Britts are afraid of offending a muslim.

No need. The US is the only country on Earth with freedom of speech. What wing does it belong to?

Why? The internet was designed this way, from the start. A system where top level domains can terminate anyone at will.

And now you're expected to choose between giving more power to the state and giving more power to the state. Such a coincidence, right?

Also waiting. I don't care about aggressive arguing, I genuinely want to know what the right wing censorship is.

I can't think of any examples.
