Fentanyl is a replacement for heroin. It will cause you to stop breathing. The way to combat it is to get your adrenaline flowing, IE, panic. Fentanyl addicts know not to go to sleep if they suspect they've taken too much. It's why he wasn't complying. Taking downers doesn't directly equate to not caring about your own life. Being dumb=not caring if you live or die.
