I am a first generation college graduate who works a million hours, accumulated hundreds of thousands of dollars of student debt for the privilege of doing so, and lives in a very high cost of living area. What does “identity” have to do with anything?

If you're hundred of Ks in the hole, in what possible sense are you a member of the 1% then? Seeing as your net worth is likely zero or negative.

I am no longer hundreds of thousands of dollars in the hole and my net worth is positive.
