That line marks the point where farms to the east receive enough rainfall to thrive and the land to the west requires irrigation for crops or to shun planting and engage in animal husbandry that can munch on the natural vegetation.

Interesting. I was about to argue that it marked the area where a heavy amount of federally owned land started .... but I checked, and that line is a little bit farther to the west than what we're looking at in the map above.

Hm that is quite interesting, it is about 1 state to the west compared to the population line. Amazing what a ridiculous percentage of land they own over there... that's just nuts
