very true

Quora allows text and images, but the width of the post area makes it tough to read

It's a bit like technology is going backwards in that sense, since most traditional forums and blogs using something like phpBB, WP or similar would enable an elaborate array of text formatting and embedding features. It makes platforms like this feel like a communal Twitter feed...That being said, this place is neither.

Having used quite a few more obscure social medias that do allow this....I think it is just technically difficult, especially for the end user. Then comes page layout issues, especially on mobile devices, and needing to prevent security issues that may arise from them. You don't want foreign web content loading for every user who views a page, without interaction.

The uploading of image files is usually a separate process, then positioning the image inside your text, frequently involves moving around a some HTML or markdown with the image link you get after uploading it. That whole workflow frequently sucks for the user.

Having your server hosting images also can add of to a lot of bandwidth and disk space quickly as well. So you'll have to do extra steps to insure that uploaded image is actually being referenced in a post somewhere. Even then, if you want your website to run fast, you'll be forking out some cash to host those images on a really fast cloud, instead.

Reddit/Saidit use Markdown on posts as well as Wiki's for subs. I remember the pain it was to add images to a Sub's Wiki pages on Reddit (before the Reddit Communities change). There was a way to upload images in your Sub's CSS editing options, where you pick the colors, title image, and define the sidebar contents. Then, you copied that link of the uploaded image and used it in a Markdown tag on the Wiki page. I think after they had the Communities overhaul, I couldn't find any way to do it and had to go to old.reddit.com, then do the upload trick, and go back to the completely separate Communities wiki, or something similarly painful.

No there is nothing technically difficult about it. All the relevent page layout tools were coded decades ago. You just load the relevent dll and build it into the application. Just like when you add a text entry box, you can add an embed image tool. The embed image tools can do everything from resizing the image to fit the page by percent of width or explicit pixel size to placing it where the users cursor was or in a predetermined image place holder.

We got inline images. i think Reddit might allow that now too.

How did you upload that image to imgur?

It was already on there, but an easy way to upload to imgur is just to make a new Saidit link post, upload your file, take the link, and close the page.

Why are all platforms derived from the same parent code all similar?

is a lowbrow question.

You can make Text titles for posts with images in the body of your post, along with descriptions. OR you can make a post straight to an image with a descriptive title. IF your content is an image strong enough to be explained with a title, make a link post. IF your content needs a bit of context provided, make a text post and link your images in the post.

Your answer is a lowbrow answer.

The choice of parent code to fork is the decision of the developer and modifications and improvements to that parent code are only restricted by whoever is administering that development.

hm yes I kinda like the way this one open source site works, but let me invent the universe from scratch instead of copy-and-pasting to get my new platform up and running
