People used to quip that the government controlled the media. I think at this point, it’s the opposite. Media controls the government, and we know who controls the media.
If you asked someone to describe what would take place in a country where it was being controlled behind the scenes by hostile outsiders who hate its citizens, they would come up with something pretty close to what we are seeing today. Including criminalization of criticizing said hostile outsiders.

Yes.
And it's the media, but not just the media, of course.
It's control of all of what is sometimes termed 'The Commanding Heights'.
The situation that follows is a relationship, between certain industries (media, banks, etc.) and government, which looks like a kind of South/Central American situation:
A small group of greed-driven financial/business interests collude with a (sold-out/corrupt) government to help each other exploit the majority of citizens.
