i.e. Russia is manipulating it's own media and social media sites the same way the US manipulates theirs.

I'll give the US credit. We do it a lot better than Russia. Putin still seems like an amateur at the PR game. He thinks fining people will work long term. The real long term solution is to stuff media companies with your political allies and then let them quietly delete all opposition. Maybe threaten "Congressional investigations" if any media company resists, like they did with Facebook and Twitter. Then it'll look like support is organic and not government manipulation.

Thats because the US guarantees the Freedom of the Press. And people believe it to be true. In Russia and China - no one believes in any of the official news reports. Vietnam too.
