While all kids mature at different rates, IMO, there should be a hard line, say 16 or 18 whereon the kid can drink, sex, military, drive, etc - a universal step into adulthood. Certainly not all kids will be smart or mature (just like any age), but they will be potentially functional solo. Up to that point they should be protected intact as they are, whatever that may be, by their family, community, and the state.

I'm ok with 18 being the age for everything (including drinking alcohol, that the age is 21 seems stupid to me). I think if you can sign up for the military you should be able to rent a car and drink, too.

IMO the drinking age is stupid. North America has outsourced the jobs of the parent to the state.
