Today I learned that the great actor Alan Arkin just passed away at age 89. My favorite of his many excellent performances is Lt. Rozanov, the First Officer of a Russian submarine in Norman Jewison's hilarious Cold War comedy The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming (1966). Arkin is completely believable as a Russian. In this wonderful scene, Arkin teaches his fellow crew members to say "Emergency! Everybody to get from street!". They've replaced their uniforms with old-fashioned suits stolen from a used-clothing store. Arkin was nominated for Best Actor for this performance.

Arkin was a terrific character actor, transforming himself into his many characters though always recognizable. He said "the beauty of being a character actor was not having to take his clothes off for a role."

Thank you for many, many laughs. He was IMO the best part of Little Miss Sunshine (2006), for which he won Best Supporting Actor.

For tragic death music whether from hubris or merely fate, it's hard to beat Wagner, especially Siegfried's Funeral Music from Götterdämmerung and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde.
