Yeah, it’s a sharp reminder that the #bekind brigade are totally happy to go more authoritarian than the religious right when it is in their favour.

It seems like the left as a whole is more down with authoritarianism. In fact, from what I've seen and heard, there seems to be a pretty close correlation between how loudly and vigorously they scream about the evils of fascism and how much they favor being the ones wearing the jackboots themselves.

I think this is one of those times that both sides are exactly the same. The fringes of the left and right are both fully on board with authoritarianism as long as it is in service to their own political beliefs.

The more centrist left and right tend to be more liberal, in the true sense of the word, and more willing to discuss, debate and compromise.

The trouble is there has been a massive shift to the fringes of late and this is causing people to lose their minds and advocate for and impose some fascist shit.

Basic horseshoe theory. It's mostly correct you get hardcore extremists that know they are absolutely right and that any sort of discussion or debate is bad because why would you even let yourself get fooled by some evil person that wants to corrupt your own pure perfect thoughts. Gotta force everyone to be the same as you.

Very different than being opinionated and open to debate. I might think I'm absolutely right about certain things and other people are totally wrong, but generally happy to discuss things with most reasonable people because I don't think they are wrong because they are evil, just because they are ignorant. If they know the same things l know they'll agree with me. Of course the opposite of that also plays true, if you consider your ideological opponents to not be evil, or idiots, but working off of wrong assumptions and incomplete information, you also must be curious to their own reasoning, which requires you to understand what they actually think, and that opens you up to ideas and information you might not have considered,

Ultimately that tends to lead people from the fringes to what we'd consider more centrist ideas. I think a lot of it comes down to context as well. I've had a lot of really stupid arguments with people that boil down to essentially, I agree with your idea in limited contexts buy don't think it is applicable to the average situation.

Mass transit development for example. High speed trains are excellent, so we should build them everywhere. Is an argument I see often. The counter extreme is "public transportation sucks, we shouldn't waste money on it".

My position is more "high speed trains are excellent, in high density population corridors, and suck everywhere else" which tends to piss off everyone on both sides of the issue.

it might be more of a matter of extremist attitude than ideological content: the left left is consistent in rejecting "stupidpol" (like Freddie DeBoer) and there's a sort of crusty consistency in the LW never actually being satisfied; there's plenty of videos of that centrist cipher Hillary screeching about how every institution in the US is secretly controlled by the Russkies; and nobody in any party refused to clap for a, uh, literal SS volunteer last Friday

hence my username: there's no bottom, no hope for some stopping-point; the only way is to step outside the bitter fights and try to understand the terms they're fighting on

horshoe theory still allows people to make a golden-mean fallacy: just add up Enver Hoxha and Jose Lopez Rega's positions, and divide by two

Exactly. I think social media has exacerbated the voice of both the fringe elements of right and left. By default these people are loud and emotionally and very dedicated. Social media is an amplifying tool that allows the voice of a loud few to talk over the voice of the reasonable.

Exactly.

Steady on, no one’s been stoned, crucified or strapped to an anti-aircraft gun….yet.

Other than WEF meetings in Davos this is the only news I've ever heard from Switzerland.

If I ever meet a Swiss person I'll say oh yeah Switzerland, that's the country where they put someone in prison for calling someone a fat lesbian.

[–]P-38lightning[S] 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

He wasn't even lying. Turns out she really is a fat lesbian.

[–]Q-Continuum-kin 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

The woman that popped up in Google didn't look fat but the article only seems to indicate the "lesbian" part was the problem. So I'm confused. Is calling a lesbian a lesbian somehow defamation?

[–]ClassroomPast6178 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Switzerland is a very, very strange country with some very odd rules.

[–]cephyrious 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Pointing something out is apparently "discrimination based on sexuality". You can call someone an ugly cunt, but if you say ugly lesbian, and lesbian is accurate, somehow that is illegal.

OMG call 911!!!

Stay tuned, Canada won't be far behind.

People go to prison for mild insults against them, but they still insist that they're so oppressed.

[–]ClassroomPast6178 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Yeah, this is nothing new. So much of the social justice pantheon of purported reality fails falsification at the first hurdle.

I would have much more time for this shit if the people pushing it were willing to engage in good faith debate and discussion, but they never are.

[–]Dontcaretoday 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

They can't engage in debate and discussion because a lot their stances don't line up with reality. It's easier just to call someone a bigot and try to silence them instead.

[–]ClassroomPast6178 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Absolutely.

It’s very hard to debate rationally when you reject logic and reason as tools of the white-cisheteropatriarchy and asking for evidence to support assertions is violence.

[–]UncleWillard56 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

But "Die Cis Scum" and "All white men should be killed" are still okay. The more the alphabet people push this narrative, the harder the backlash will be when the pendulum swings back.

Can someone tell me where I can call this fat lesbian a fat lesbian?

[–]HiddenFox 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

www.saidit.com

You can try reddit.com but I don't think you will get very far...

[–]SMCAB 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Okay, she's a fat lesbian. Someone who tweets tell her I said that.

[–]jet199 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Are they saying there is something shameful about being a fat lesbian?
