Hey since you're new: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/37r/welcome_to_saiditnet/

In the footer of the site is a lot of other great stuff.

You can spank your monkey anywhere, crank the shaft anywere on the web even or oogle boobies on facebook! It's more of a problem when people, and they do, link to clearly illegal (or borderline illegal nobody knows the origin of) It's an easy way to send the feds on someone.

And again, if you read the introduction post you'll get a clearer picture of saidit and that it's Not just a reddit clone, one of those differences is the porn rule.

Hmm maybe you forgot to read: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/37r/welcome_to_saiditnet/ ?

Those two are in regards to my my own statements:

  1. Not what I said, not everywhere, IMHO plenty of dedicated places do excist however.
  2. That's a big issue, I don't know you, but I as Mod wouldn't like to check every porn link to see if it's even legal.

After your edit : 'so go there instead if you're interested in that type of content.'

Is pretty clear in my view.

But i was referring more to:

We're trying to create an environment that encourages thought-provoking discussion, like how reddit used to be 5+ years ago, when Aaron Swartz was still around.

from https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/37r/welcome_to_saiditnet/

[–]Wanga 8 insightful - 2 fun8 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 2 fun -  (10 children)

OP is correct in saying that porn subs won't interfere with/affect thought-provoking discussion on other subs.

[–]magnora7 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

OP is wrong because that stuff bleeds over in to the front page and affects the culture and the way people behave on the site. There's just no reason to have it around. It brings almost only negatives, and very few positives.

[–]Wanga 3 insightful - 4 fun3 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 4 fun -  (8 children)

very few positives

Tittays!

And the way people are chilll with each other in porn comments much moreso than political or even music/art comments

[–]magnora7 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Meh, go hang out on pornhub if that's what you really want. It already exists.

[–]Wanga 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

Can you name one kind of content SaidIt can be used for that does NOT already exist elsewhere on the web?

[–]magnora7 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

I don't want to have to moderate tons of porn, and I don't want people to be able to post illegal porn to be able to shut down saidit. Porn is one of the few pieces of content that can can be used to shut down the site. It's also everywhere for anyone who wants it so there's absolutely no shortage of it, it's probably the least shortage of any information on the internet. So we don't need it.

[–]Intuit 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Does the lack of porn negatively impact thought-provoking discussion? Would people who would leave here because of a lack of porn have contributed significantly to thought-provoking discussion? I think both are no. I have to think that some thought has gone into this barring of porn, so arguments "what's the harm", "why not eliminate all these other things as well" are last-ditch pleas.

[–]rockstarsball 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I worked at Microsoft and when I was there, free tool specifically for scanning porn submissions and flagging suspected illegal porn. I forget the name of it but I can reach out to some friends and see if they can hook you up if that's your main concern. As long as you make a reasonable effort to remove and block illegal content you wont get hassled.

[–]send_nasty_stuff 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I totally support you on this porn exclusion. How does saidit feel about 'beauty' subs? I.e. subs that just deal with aesthetically pleasing women or men. Not that I want to run one of those I'm just curious where the line is. Reddit was so hilariously evil when it banned r/whitebeauty but allowed all other racial beauty subs to keep operating.

[–]HorseMeat[S] 6 insightful - 4 fun6 insightful - 3 fun7 insightful - 4 fun -  (9 children)

You can spank the monkey anywhere, sure. But this site (according to the welcome post) aims for "thought-provoking discussion" & "fun" kinda like how Reddit was 5+ years ago. You could argue that subs like s/pics s/memes fits under fun. I would say pornography also fits under the fun category too. Reddit has had this sort-of content for 10 years. Five of those years being in the golden era.

[–]Mnemonic 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

I would say pornography also fits under the fun category too.

I would see saidit more as a Library for adults (we discus piracy to sexworker laws) but just not the images/videos (or audio for some) of porn. Do that somewhere else, you can discuss it, just not show it.

*also these are just my opinions.

[–]HorseMeat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

I would agree with you if the "Fun" catergory & subs didn't exist, but they do. Personally I don't see the issue with catering to different types of people. It's what makes the concept of subs interesting.

[–]Mnemonic 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

That's were we disagree, The catering is too much hassle (with porn) while there are all dedicated sites for it. Catering to debate and information is hard enough.

[–]HorseMeat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Actually, catering is fairly easy with subs because you get the choice whether or not to visit them. For example: Say you don't enjoy politics, it's easy enough to avoid due to the fact subs are like little communities.

[–]Mnemonic 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Catering also means verifying stuff is even legal. If you cater food, you are also responsible when it's poisoned. This is a problem for all subjects, but I hope you can see how much more difficult it is with porn than with death?

[–]HorseMeat[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

As I said in the first post, have trust in the sub moderators. I'm sure we wouldn't have WPD or SS if we didn't trust them to do their duty correctly. It works for Reddit on even the smaller subs so it would work here too. The reporting system exists for a reason.

It should also be taken into account that Saidit is currently tiny in comparison, so content management is fairly easy at this point. And even once it starts to grow, there will be more users to actively report illegal content to the sub moderators.

[–]Mnemonic 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

On the first point we are getting into a loop: read my previous posts about the nature (In my view) of saidit.

On the Second, still mods gotta see if it's legal, more users could also be coming here because porn is allowed and the community is small so illegal stuff is easy coming through (Mostly why 9000+ 4chan clones have failed and maybe 2 are around for a time worth mentioning).

[–]HorseMeat[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Loops happen sometimes. (See Brexit for example)

I'm not sure that would be true. In my experience with alternatives, people tend to have to work to find them. The ones who do find them tend to want to protect it from failing. But if what you said was true, why aren't movie nerds flocking over in mass numbers? There's quite a few illegal links in s/piracy/.

[–]bonked_or_maybe_not 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

have trust in the sub moderators

Law enforcement never will. You don't have to be guilty to lose everything you own in an investigation/trial.

You can spank your monkey anywhere, crank the shaft anywere on the web even or oogle boobies on facebook!

You're assuming that horsemeat is man.

[–]Mnemonic 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Not to be sexist, but it is men who would complain about the lack of porn.

[–]Tom_Bombadil 1 insightful - 3 fun1 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Envision a bulging equine vagina...

Horsemeat is a unique female exception.

JK! Ha!
