you couldn't do it by URL (how I assume the YouTube check is working)

yep, the comment/markdown expandos are purely url based, so unless we wanted to regex match "videos/watch/6757cfca-3dfe-4295-aaac-dfec4ccea5b2" and assume it's PeerTube, I think that's the best it can reasonably get.

PeerTube saidit posts could probably be checked and media players could appear. html content is fetched by saidit for posts like for the thumbnails like you mentioned.

Looking at the source html for a video page though, there's nothing that says 'hey im peertube' so even then it's not clearcut. Sounds like a good feature request for PeerTube, to add a PeerTube specific meta tag so we can show their shit.

For now, you could check for the following:

<noscript>
  <p>You are blocking Javascript, and we totally get that. However this endpoint uses Angular, so the front end is in full JavaScript and won't work without it.
  </br></br>
  There will be other non JS-based clients to access PeerTube, but for now none is available. Be sure we will update this page with a list once alternative clients are developed. You can certainly develop you own in the meantime as our code is open source and libre software under GNU AGPLv3.0.
  </br></br>
  There might be numerous reasons you refuse to use JavaScript. If it has just to do with security (or lack thereof) of JavaScript-based webapps, then depending on your threat menace you might want to go through the code running on the node you are trying to access, and look for security audits.
  </p>
</noscript>

Well I love PeerTube and want to help it catch on so I'm in. I should also add some other video providers while I'm at it. I'll do PeerTube and BitChute for sure, probably DTube, are there any others that should be added?

We're always looking for more volunteer help with the code too ;)

Unfortunately I have no time… :-(

There's also DLive and others.

I wanna bring your attention to YouTube-DLG, the GUI for YouTube-DL, a command line app that can download from almost anywhere, both opensource. I don't know if it's any help or not, but it might be.

I could try to help if you have the patience to lead.

I'm just after video providers that we can detect urls for, and show the embedded players on site, like how YouTube works here. So after this update, instead of just supporting YouTube, we'll support like 4 video providers. I know I'm missing a couple but I think these are the main ones. I guess maybe Vimeo should be on the list too.

Yep, YouTube-DL is legit, I was using it a bit before I got into PeerTube with it's import from YouTube directly capability.

I use DLG. It can download entire channels and directories. Unfortunately it's all in one go, so if it's stopped or interrupted part way you'll need to start over. Fortunately it recognizes when it has a complete or partial download and will skip the complete ones and continue the partials. It can go for days, but you also have to watch your drive space when low. If you have a long list and your power goes out, your list is gone forever.

I also like that it will download the largest thumbnail "maxres" and the largest video and the audio channel if you set it to. Unfortunately I don't know how to set it to delete its large temp files, so I have to manually clean those up. I usually delete the isolated audio if it's not music or an audio podcast anyway.

In my dreams everyone would be able to afford a server of their own, ready out of the box to join the decentralized permanent web - and in SaidIt we'd have a 3rd "archive" button that everyone could click on to scrape and download the articles and media they liked to be eternally archived and shared forever - and somehow folks could be sustainably rewarded for their original content and curation efforts.

I think the regex thing wouldn't be a terrible idea, because they all fit that pattern and I don't think anything else uses that.

Yeah it's probably worth it. We already have messed up expandos for wikipedia image links, no biggie.

I issued them for a meta tag: https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube/issues/1590

That makes me and /u/JasonCarswell issue brothers. Or shoot, nearly issue brothers, different projects.

Who voted this as funny? Maybe the other strange things voted as funny have something in the article I didn't read, but how is this anything other than insightful???

Probably to boost it higher.

That was me. Temporarily boosting it.

Fun, not funny.
