You can "cross-pollinate" as you describe it; if you log into an account on one Mastodon instance you can post on others… but you can't sign into the other instances directly.

Many people run their own instances, and connect to the Fediverse from there. Personally, I don't, but that's mostly because I can't port-forward on my ISP plan. (I hate that, but I'm willing to sacrifice that freedom for now.)

I was logged into Fosstodon but had to create a new usere on Mastodon. Maybe, now I realize I also haven't posted anything with nothing to say.

Running your own instance just to host yourself? Interesting.

Log into Fosstodon and use Mastodon from Fosstodon. They're not separate websites; merely different windows to the same "Fediverse". The only thing that's site-specific is the "local timeline".
