Looking at Iraq, I'd say the US is the one losing that war at the moment.

I think you misunderstand American foreign policy. US policy is to be in a state of almost continual low-level warfare, as a way of justifying a continual flow of billions of dollars of tax payer money to the military-industrial complex (which includes many members of Congress). They can't justify continual warfare if they are competent enough to win.

And then there is the Ledeen Doctrine:

“Every ten years of so, the United States needs to pick up some small crappy little country and throw it against the wall, just to show the world we mean business."

I understand that quite well.

The only difference is the people in charge at the moment are so incompetent that rather than pick on tiny little countries, they've decided to fight both of the other two major super-powers at the same time. If the trend continues, I think a lot of people in the US vastly under-estimate the ability of the world to hit-back.
