Petty bourgeois is more like it. But I've yet to meet a self avowed commie who isn't some privileged bourgeois.
It's why communism always is a shit show. Marx hits on some generally valid points like the increasing control of capital into a few parties and the stratification of industrial society removing the agency of the working class and diverting more and more of the product of their labor to the managerial classes.
But then it goes off the rails into a bunch of utopian nonsense. You get young students that very much aren't part of the working class larping as communists then saying shit like "the worker should own their own means of production" which hey, I agree with that in theory, you should own your own field and be able to grow your own food and not have to go through some massive corporate entity to survive, but hey I shop at the super market same as you because it's actually way less work to do that vs growing my own food.
Other shut they don't get is their whole agrarian utopian art commune nonsense. Who is going to grow the damn food? Sure having time for the arts is important but you are going to sit around all day philosophizing the food ain't getting grown, in a truly equitable society you'd just end up starving to death. Since you own your own means of production and decide not to produce.
The ant and the grasshopper, such a shitty fable for children. The grasshopper plays around all summer then lives off the work of the ants in the winter because they buy his son story and just don't leave him out to freeze in the cold. This is society. The only difference is in the communist society the ants are red!

The weirdest part to me is why they chose to make the middle class (bourgeois) their top enemy (even ignoring that most of them actually belong to that class). I guess I can sympathize with hating useless managers, but ultimately they're just cogs in the "system" too, hardly the masterminds of it. Why don't they spend as much time railing against the ultra rich?

Cause they get paid more.
So called communists are usually just immature kids so they rail against whomever is close and convenient. If you want to actually start digging into the historical movements of communism and their writings it's a lot more complicated. But years of anti-communist propoganda in the west essentially limits those self identifying as communists these days to anti-social youth whose most pressing concern is their oppression by the boss that wants them to show up on time.
