This is what I suspect, Reddit -- and other major social media platforms-- has their equivalent of Twitter's takedown portal for the feds. The scrubbing of people's accounts just happens too fast and too broadly for it to be unorganized.

I think the account suspensions are done by Reddit, but FBI has to have unfettered access to view everything that runs through their site. Like you, I suspect Reddit has Feds whispering in its ear about account suspensions and forum sliding.
