Back in the day, when I was like 15 or 16, I was reading the books and also mostly-believed gender identity theory, I remember this line standing out to me as interesting.

"I'm not his [the Hound's] stupid son!" said Arya furiously. That was even worse than being taken for a boy.

Arya is intentionally crossdressing but still doesn't like being misgendered. This was when I still thought misgendering was a thing, and took TRAs at their word when they said cis people don't like it either, and this struck me as an interesting example of that premise in action.

Came here to say that. Martin writes Arya, Brienne, and Asha very clearly as strong women who are confined by gendered expectations. He never pretends they aren’t women and, I think, actually has some good commentary on how those expectations hurt women with these character as well as Sansa and Cersei.

I hate that gender non-conforming keeps getting lumped into trans. GNC is a complete rejection of gender roles. Trans is a complete acceptance of gender roles. They're literally fucking opposites.

Brienne wasn't called trans though, at least there's that, she was just referred to as GNC.
