I remember reading this last year but to see the damage it caused Hugh is so sad.

Zoe Terakes is behind this and she would have been all of 19 or 20 when penning the open letter. She can’t act, she can’t act and she can’t act. Watching her on the opening scene for Wentworth season 8 was mortifying. It was worst the acting and character in the show. But she was praised to the frighten moon and back just for being trans or non bin, hence the delusion in believing that the world centres around her and all trans roles on Australia go to her but default. So the only way she would land an acting role this big is to bully people into giving it to her.

Also if she ever plays a non trans / non bin role aka cos let’s cancel her because in her logic acting means you must not act and only play characters similar to who you are IRL.

Yeah, that's what this argument is too often. It's not "Why aren't you giving trans actors roles?" it's "Why aren't you giving ME roles?". Same thing with the guy who did The Problem With Apu, you could tell throughout the documentary that the guy was blatantly gunning for the role

The only one where I can see it being semi legitimate is when it comes to disability, because it feels like they do genuinely get screwed. But even then, surely we should be aiming for opening up the roles available to disabled actors, rather than making it so they can basically only play the same role with the same stories. Like instead of making it so the blind character in a story about someone living with blindness HAS to be played by a blind actor, we could give them roles like sarcastic best friend, who happens to be blind.

In other words, "If I can't have it, then they can't either." Classic narcissistic abuse maneuver.

Cancel culture is an exercise in doublethink and hypocrisy.

When a victim like JK Rowling comes out of it with their liveliehood intact, proponents will say "See, cancel culture doesn't exist!"

If a victim is fired, impoverished or otherwise destroyed, it's called "Being held accountable"
