USA...and on top of that a hyper progressive area. The state is blue, the county is blue and the city is blue. Everything revolves around "righting the wrongs of the cis white male." I hate it.

That’s fucked up. If it wasn’t for Florida, Texas, South Dakota and Arkansas, and other states like them, I’d write America off as a lost cause.

Well the empire is fading fast. We might not have the all out civil war that fanatics on both sides want but the destruction of the country is well underway.

Balkanisation like what happened to the Roman Empire imminent?

Not technically, because we all speak the same language and are dividing along class and ideological lines rather than ethnic. We are rapidly living in two different countries quite literally. Where I live masking was never strictly enforced and I haven't worn a mask in months. I live in an urban area too.

Since you've brought it up, have you ever heard the term Ulsterisation used similarly before? I just Googled and it apparently has a wildly different definition than I thought. I read a sociology book years ago which defined it as a homogeneous population self-segregating along ideological lines. If that's the case, that would be much more similar to what we're experiencing here. There are liberal neighborhoods in my city that I get uncomfortable being in because of how strident they are about masking and vaccinations. There's also the issue of the higher crime rate and homeless people lining the street because they humor them too much.

We all speak the same language? You're talking about the United States?

[–]PatsyStoneMaverique 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

We have different languages at home and within different subcultures, but we all speak English to each other. There isn't a part of the U.S. where another language gets used that same way.

We're so absurdly diverse where I live that we end being homogenous. Your politics and class status define who you are more than your religion or race.

Ulsterisation! That’s the word. From what I’ve been seeing online, there are two very different Americas: one where there are draconian covid rules and one where people are free like we all were in 2019. I’m jealous that you could get away with not wearing a mask. Masks don’t work. We still have to wear them indoors in Ireland, even if you’re vaccinated.

What do you think your government's goal is with that? Wasn't the guy in charge at the beginning of all of this a doctor?

There was always an antipathy to the masks here because of the heavy association they have with the Democratic Party in the U.S. Trump rarely (if ever?) wore a mask when he was in office. We also had an indoor mandate, but a lot of local businesses just declined to enforce it and the city declined to fine them for it.

It's always been pretty obvious the masks are for show. I worked through the pandemic and we didn't even start wearing masks until 2 months in. You couldn't get them. Our director famously said at one of our first pandemic staff meetings, "If I had masks, I'd be selling them." 😝

Also, since somebody jumped in to correct me, I should clarify that Americans speak dozens of ethnic languages at home and within immigrant communities, but we speak English to each other and all business is conducted in English. I'm even including Spanish in that. That's what I meant by "we speak the same language."

I think our government either wants to control the population, or they just do whatever Silicon Valley and the European Union tell the government to do. People here also associate not wearing masks with Donald Trump, and most people here don’t like him at all. But people are beginning to forget about Trump so hopefully a lot of anti-Trump Irish people will soon realise that masks are bullshit.

I hear that America is kinda like Singapore when it comes to languages. Most Singaporeans speak Chinese at home, a good proportion speak English, some speak Malay and some speak Tamil. But English is the language nearly everyone speaks in public, whether it be at work or at school. In Ireland, we speak English but at home and in public, but about 2% of the population speaks the Irish language at home and you have to be fluent in it if you want to have certain careers, like primary school teaching, law enforcement or politics. We also have minority groups from Eastern Europe who speak Russian or Polish at home, but they can speak English in public and when they have Irish friends over to visit.

About 75% of Americans are monolingual English speakers, and families that speak another language at home are almost always first or second generation immigrants. It's extremely rare for grandchildren of immigrants to be fluent enough in their ethnic language to actually converse in it, if they are it's usually because the family has invested a lot of time and money into making sure they learn it. I'm honestly shocked that so many people speak Irish still, I thought it was a historical language like Latin.

Is the Irish government afraid of its citizens? Sorry to say I'm ignorant about Ireland.

I've read that there's some shady financial business that goes on there involving American companies, it would certainly be true to form for American businesses to try and rule a foreign country through bribes and threats of financial hardship. Anti-Trump brainwashing being used to control people's behavior is kind of a hallmark of our corporate overlords. He is their Boogeyman.

Since Covid regulations are so heavily connected to elections here, I guess I'm baffled as to what other countries are trying to accomplish with theirs. Australia for instance. What the fuck?

About a hundred thousand still speak Irish. And it is slowly being revived. There are hopes that Ireland will become a bilingual country one day, although time will tell how that turns out. The language used to be a rural language, but now it’s increasingly used in urban areas. Parents are giving their kids Irish names now - in my parents’ and grandparents’ generations almost everyone had English-language names, though about a half of those names are of Irish origin. Now about half of all Irish zoomers have Irish language names. So even if Ireland will remain an English-speaking country forever, the Irish language is definitely recovering.

Yes, Irish politicians are scared of us. There have been many scandals lately, even before covid. Corruption in the healthcare sector, corruption within the police, corruption within social services, mismanagement of public infrastructure, underpaid soldiers and police officers, dishonest government-sponsored media, rising taxes and cuts to social services, politicians giving themselves bigger wages, cover ups of child sexual abuse by not just priests but by people in several sectors and so on. Now covid has happened, and many Irish people are catching on that our government are not just incompetent, but apathetic to us. Recently, some of our politicians have been to events of more than 50 people. When that was exposed, the government said that outdoor events of up to 200 people are allowed. Problem is, we didn’t know that. Now the hospitality sector wants blood.

Trump is terrible politician in my opinion, but as far as I’m concerned, he’s better than Obama and Bush. In fact, he’s better than most of our own politicians. The Irish media secretly loves Trump because then they can make our inept and greedy politicians look good in comparison through propaganda. And our government is beholden to multinational corporations, and these corporations are in turn beholden to the US federal government, the UN and the EU. Lately I’ve softened my stances against Russia and China for these reasons, and while I know that their governments are still bad, it’s not like western governments are any better.

Australia is a basket case. The government claims it wants to achieve a ‘zero-covid’ strategy, but that is impossible to achieve, and most other governments have conceded that it’s ridiculous. My friend used to live in Australia’s and he came back to Ireland a few years ago. He says he’ll never go back, and the draconian, nanny-state government is one of the main reasons why. Ireland had it bad with our government during the pandemic, but I really do not envy the people living in Australia or New Zealand. The governments in those countries overreact to everything.

Im not sure how its going to pan out. Im just a random nobody whose read a bit of history. I do know it will be bad in a myriad of ways though. History has been pretty clear on that front.
