If we're going by historical context (just as we go about TQ+ using queer), those are insults with ableist origin. Dumb used to refer to those who couldn't speak and/or were deaf due to congenital reasons, stupid is based on stupor, idiot is mental/learning disabilities. It's similar to the f-g (used to mean something else before became a slur towards same sex attraction alongside queer). Fool? As far as I know, that isn't ableist and was used for jesters. Although, let's be honest here, I wouldn't be surprised. You got terms like hysterical/hysteria (which some would consider that sexist for justified reasons).

What I'm talking about is that we (as in the sub) seem to very quick to go after TQ+ and their usage of what could be considered slurs (ex queer, although some would say that has been "reclaimed") when we also allow discriminatory language on here to go free. We compare these people and what they do to those with mental disorders. We also use said mental disorders as insults.

  • short reply: Basically, we're using mental disorders, something people with disabilities have no control over, as negative connotations to describe the behaviors of TQ+.

personally? i think you're reaching here

For calling out hipocrisy? Either all slurs should be considered bad and not used or all should be considered fair game.

You might be consider I'm "reaching" because it's normalized (alongside history being not told about it) but just because it's normalized does not make it alright. I would appreciate, as someone who is disabled, if people weren't hypocrites about this bs. Ableism is just as messed up as other discrimination and should be taken action against.

You are "reaching" because you are using an extremist black and white interpretation of words.

I don't actually care how you feel about the origins of certain words which used to be legitimate medical terminology for poorly understood conditions.

Calling someone stupid is in no way an attempt to make fun of a medical condition.

Additionally, "queer" isn't bad "because it's a slur". The QT+ movement has attached an entire political and pseudo-religious ideology to the word. So it's bad because not only is and was the word used as a slur, but the modern explicit usage of the word carries with it a completely toxic ideology.

I would rather someone call me queer as a slur than to imply i ascribe to the ideology.

k, so how would you propose we make the distinction between TRA behavior and other forms of mental illness?

Why is using disabilities as insults a good thing? It adds problems to my/their community. People already don't take ableism as seriously compared to other forms of discrimination.

The loudmouth of TQ+ are assholes, and ignorant but being an asshole doesn't automatically mean mental disorder. You don't have to reply on others mental illness and using those as an insult.

You don't have to reply on others mental illness and using those as an insult.

But they're the ones falling back on their mental illness as the cause and excuse for their behavior. According to Alice, everyone needs to pretend Alice is a woman or he will kill himself because of his mental illness. Alice cites modern therapy; which allegedly claims that his brand of mental illness demands everyone keep up this pretense. If that's what the mentally ill and the mental health experts that treat them say, who am I to say otherwise? All I can say is fuck him and fuck his mental illness, I'm not going to compromise my autonomy even if it means he kills himself over his inability to force me to do things.

u/just_lesbian_things said it best:

The post was deleted but I get that they're trying to use their mental illness as an excuse... The problem is, instead of singling these individuals out, this adds further stigmatization to mental illness which has shown to have negative impact as is. Especially since it causes shame and the people don't want to get help because they're gonna be associated with xyz.
