I really want to believe this but..... At age 16 he got two (I'm assuming here) minimum wage jobs as a dishwasher and a fast food place, got emancipated and moved out? There are some chunks of this story that are not making any sense at all. Like how he was held hostage at home for years, but it sounds like when he finally got enrolled in school he was able to go to class with kids his own age?

I don't know... But if it's all true, the mom's behavior sounds like a new form of Munchausen by proxy.

I'm not even going to read it again because we went over it back when it got posted to reddit and it's an obvious fiction.

Oh, I'm glad! I always feel like an asshole not believing a victim's story, but all I kept seeing was red flag, red flag, red flag!

Hmmm, I wish I could read that thread. Nothing jumps out at me as being not possible, simply improbable but possible.

I can remove the post if it is fiction.

I worked in the legal field for 20 years and I've seen many improbable stories that were real . . .

At 16 I had two jobs too, but it was only because I ran out from home to other city and was homeless, and needed something to eat and I was hoping to get enough money to start studying in the University.

So it is possible, but I have a big grain of suspicion about such stories myself.

However, his jobs seems reasonably possible, as they are just performing drag concerts and doing photosessions. I haven't read it fully, tho, just glimpsed with one eye open.

I don't understand how he could support himself with paychecks form those two minimum wage jobs though, especially if they are both part-time. Even grown-ass adults can't do that. I did the math and in California it would be a little over 3k after taxes. So rent, food, bills, that money is gone. The other possibility is that he moved in with a friend in a low-rent, or rent-free situation, which makes waaaaaay more sense. Then he'd have tons left over with enough to save. (But let's be real, who is lucky enough to find two minimum wage jobs that both give you 40 hours a week?) Sorry don't mean to sound like I'm moving the goalposts, it's just what my thought process was when writing that comment.

I appreciate critical thinking and comments.

I think the author is not a professional writer and may have omitted salient details that would fill in some of the blanks.

After listening to thousands of liars over the decades in court, the style of writing seems individual and not faked.

That said, if not true, I wonder how many similar stories have happened that have gone unreported. Many, I suspect . . .

I don't understand this, either. As someone else mentioned, seems unlikely to be true.

To be fair though, I do know of 18-19 year olds personally who have escaped abusive households and supported themselves; that part is not so surprising to me, and while it is rare for someone 16, it's been done before. Given some other questionable elements of the story, though, who knows for this one.
