I mean it's probably as simple as the old love tragedy.

Girl likes boy, boy doesn't like girl. Girl still wants what she can't have. Girl changes herself in futile attempt to get boy, boy still doesn't like her, girl gets despondent and kills herself.

Story of the little mermaid essentially, original version before Disney gave it a happy ending.

In this case I'd reckon it's, girl likes gay guy, gay guy doesn't like girl, girl tried to become gay guy to get him, gay guy still doesn't like her because he's still gay. The end.

I think reading too much into it can give make it harder to see what it is. Almost always it comes from simply not accepting yourself, not liking the fact that you are different and forcing yourself to fit in rather than just accepting that you can't have everything you want and instead to just go with what you can have.

Yeah I think you're right. It's best to keep it straight forward and not complicated any further.
