Anime is dangerous for adult men. And that cartoon is perfect.

Not dangerous, it reveals their obsessive creepy personalities. If this was any other accessible (easy to draw and modern) art form, they would adopt it and use it to express their ideal inages of themselves.

It's about the character tropes present in anime that they wish they embodied, and for the record it's definitely not limited to guys, either. I knew girls that read manga when they were in middle/high school, and I don't think it's a coincidence that we're also seeing a lot more AAPs (autoandrophiles) following the rise of hentai (porn manga), specifically yaoi (hentai featuring male couples with the intended audience being primarily female).

No, there's been a rise of acceptance of the attitudes to be identified as something else. It just happens to be that anime is popular, the western world has gotten a lot more accepting and less judgemental of diverse ideas and hobbies (and that empowers the ill-educated and bias people to explore ideas and accept them and express them without scrutiny). It just looks like anime has inspired a bunch of people to be trans, if people weren't so accepting of "weirdoes" this wouldn't happen and by your logic, Japanese female and male cultural attitudes towards gender and sexuality should be more "progressive" than the west and we should be seeing more males in Japan identifying and campaigning for trans rights much earlier than the west considering the Yaoi and Hentai they consume is for them. For them to be obsessive and crazy in the first place, they've got to have that type of personality and anime just happens to be their favourite. Yaoi and Hentai has always been popular so there's no "rise", it's always been there and always been extremely depraved or incorporated into more innocent genres (e.g. Kyou Kara Maou) way before the trans movement and that's during the golden age of pirating anime series on the internet (before legal stream sites and many years before the massive purge of content). I never said it was exclusive to males.

I just hate it that they give anime as a whole such a bad rep. People hear anime now and they thing weird hentai shit while saying anime is basically like saying movies. Ye there are weird movies and porn movies but most of the movies arent that at all. And it's the same with anime.

[–]BiologyIsReal 14 insightful - 1 fun14 insightful - 0 fun15 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Anime has had its bad rep for a while, but it feels like this TRA stuff is making it worse. The ironic thing is plenty of anime are "transphobic" by TRA standards.

After reading this talk, I think I've to watch Sword of the Stranger.

Take my like.

Exactly, there's many different types of anime. My whole family(significant other, brothers, and parents) watch anime in different genres. My dad is in his 70s and he'll watch anime movies from MadHouse(e.g. Sword of the Stranger, Paprika) and Studio Ghibli. My mom mostly watches family friend anime from Studio Ghibli(ex. Spirited Away, Ponyo, etc) and then my youngest brother likes to watch stuff like Bleach or Naruto. Another bro watches Full Metal Alchemist, Dragon Ball series and One Piece, then finally the oldest likes to watch anime that people hardly heard of and gets me good recommendations...which I still need to watch...

I usually keep it to myself that I like anime because I get stupid remarks from people and was bullied as a kid for being a "weirdo who watches anime".

Edit: I mispoke, Sword of the Stranger is by Bones studio whereas Paprika is by Madhouse, I get those studios confused with one another. 😵‍💫 They're both equally good though!!

Edit 2: word

Agreed.

I've seen sword of the stranger and loved it very much. I made a lot of recommendations to friends to watch anime and most never watch it. It makes me sad i can never share my love for the anime Kekkai Sensen (blood blockade battlefront) with anyone ;(

[–]PeakingPeachEater 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

It makes me sad i can never share my love for the anime Kekkai Sensen (blood blockade battlefront) with anyone ;(

I just looked that up and --- that's by the same creator of GUNGRAVE and TRIGUN(aka Yashuhiro Nightow)!! I haven't watched Kekkai Sense but now I HAVE to watch it! Gungrave is really good too by the way!

Here's the plot I found online since I'm no good at explaining things lol:

Gungrave opens thirteen years after Brandon Heat is betrayed and killed by his best friend Harry MacDowell. He is reborn through the use of necrolyzation as Beyond The Grave, and begins a quest of revenge against the crime syndicate. The series then backtracks to Brandon's youth, and follows him and Harry as they rise through the criminal underworld, detailing the circumstances that led to their eventual falling-out.

I've heard of Trigun but haven't got into watching it yet, heard it was good.

Btw, your username made me go buy coffee lol. I really needed some today. I think I see you too on DroptheT? Unless I confuse you for someone else, then I'm sorry. :-(

[–]NeedMoreCoffee 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

YES YES it's the same creator!! I was in love with Trigun and the moment i heard another of his manga was being animated i jumped on it. He has such great world building. It's all weird and yet you feel you are in that world because of the details and the humour and character development.

No you aren't confused I'm on droptheT aswel! I hope you enjoyed that coffee :)

[–]YoutiaoLover 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I can't help watching Kekkai Sensen over and over again because it's SO GOOD. It's in my Top 10 must watch anime for anyone who loves awesome action scenes and great comedy!

[–]NeedMoreCoffee 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Omg same!! :D

All the main characters have their own charm and i love that that world is so crazy

I'm not sure if it's a style preference of your grammar, but I'm going to put this down in case you weren't aware, "e.g." is what people use. I love "Sword of the Stranger". The fighting and animation, the weapons people used were done very realistically. I love that movie.

Edit: Spelling

[–]PeakingPeachEater 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oh, I did not know. I shall fix my grammer, thanks! :-)

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Sword of the Stranger is so good, I remember watching it and I loved but that was years ago, then I forgot completely about it! Thanks for reminding me, gotta watch it again when I can. That, Tiger and Bunny and FMA. God, I miss watching anime, I had a huge ass list to "watch later" but later never came lmao.

[–]NeedMoreCoffee 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oh I loved Tiger and Bunny. It was such a fun take on western superheroes.

[–]TheOnyxGoddess 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oh yeah. I've been seeing people blaming anime here for a while, but anime is just an art form. Do I have to start telling people to watch "Mushishi" and "Usagi Drop" to get them to understand that "anime" (which is japanese for "animation") doesn't just include animated hentai? Kind of think of it, I remember being told that whenever people think "anime" people think "hentai", but that was my asshole brother and he watches porn so I'm assuming that's what he thinks and not a reflection of what most people think (pretty sure most people think "Sailor Moon" or "Naruto").

I don't have a problem with anime itself and I like some anime aesthetics, but it's just funny how they actually perceive themselves as anime girls. They even try to emulate it in real life and fail miserably. That's just beyond cringe.

[–]dreamgerms 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Because their concept of womanhood is based primarily on the extreme (frequently animated) pornography that they obsessively consume. It’s beyond delusional.

[–]purrvana 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I know multiple TIMs and they all have anime or cartoon profile pictures even though they're all in their 30s. Not a single other person I know in their 30s has a cartoon profile pic. I know one 18 year old girl who does, but that's it.

[–]TheOnyxGoddess 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I haven't met a single tranny anime fan who has that, but I have met a tranny who loves to wear animal ears and it's a TiF. I also have met a TiF who uses her actual face as a profile picture, she's a fan of anime.

[–]purrvana 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

I know two TIFs and they both use their face as their profile photos. Although for transgender awareness day the other day, one of them posted a photo of herself with a furry during a pride parade :/

[–]TheOnyxGoddess 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm under the impression that furries really like to be trans. Not saying all furries are like that, but a lot of them seem to be like that.

[–]Femaleisnthateful 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I think there's a huge causal connection between trans identification and people's growing immersion in internet and gaming realms. I'm no neuroscience expert, though I read up on it a lot (Oliver Sacks, Norman Doidge, etc).

In Doidge's 'The Brain that Heals Itself', he describes how the brain can create an image of the body that is often in conflict with the real thing (I forget the exact terminology). He applies it in reference to the phantom pain of amputees, and people with eating disorders (who see themselves as fat when they're not). I suspect it also applies to gender dysphoria; people are creating fictional identities for themselves and transferring them to real life. The disconnect manifests as 'dysphoria'.

Unfortunately, the current social mandate of 'affirmation' only serves to reinforce this dysphoria, which is probably why we see so many trans people whose emotional health gets worse after 'coming out'.

[–]TheOnyxGoddess 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I would like to mention the connection between trans and gamers in one of my replies, though my theory of how it affects people is different from the author you just mentioned.

My theory is that there's been a growing disconnect from reality because people have gone outside less they have observed people less, this makes them more susceptible to radical ideas. People are always looking for identity, community and trying to be different all at the same time, so they hinge on the most deluded concepts, like being trans and because we live in an age where individuality is worshipped and being "boring" and the "same" as "everyone else" is something regarded as something lesser. Another thing I theorise is that people are always trying to figure out their own identities and how their identities affect how they interact in the society they live in (e.g. children of migrants feel out of place in Australia due to different cultural attitudes and mentality). By claiming "trans" you have made it more physically tangible, trans people get closure on why they might be more of a tomboy or a tomgirl compared to people of their sex.

The closest thing I have a theory to "phantom limb" like the author you mentioned is that people realise that they can't change their bodies on a whim in real life (like their avatars on the internet) which has created a sense of loss of freedom that they can't emulate in real life, but can only achieve on the internet.

Maybe women don't do it online in public spaces. Think about all of the things we do privately that we don't put on the internet.

Reminds me of a post about sex dolls on the butchlesbians sub. Men are publicly in "relationships" with their sex dolls... one dude even married his sex doll. Women buy sex (or "love") dolls but are private about that sort of thing... which actually sucks and makes women seem so boring. Lol

[–]TheOnyxGoddess 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

We haven't seen a woman being open with her sex doll yet. However there is a masturbation bar, so close enough.

the only info i can find about it is from 2012. I dont think it existed for very long though

[–]TheOnyxGoddess 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

It closed, though the fact it got established shows there is a woman who is sexually open and confident.

[–]TheOnyxGoddess 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

A lot of people like to represent themselves as some cartoon, I like to draw myself as a cartoon of some sort when I was a kid, but I'm not surprised if any TIs (Trans-Identified) do this a lot because they want to represent themselves as the opposite sex and are fixated on that.

Anime is not a bad thing, if you only appreciate some aspects of it and can discern reality from it, but when it turns to something twisted well anime is not a good thing, and you should not watch it if you are mentally ill or are prone to delusion, like any horror movies or violent video games
