they're offensive and belittling of people with Down's syndrome, dementia, TBIs, cerebral palsy, stroke, MS, ALS, Parkinson's and a whole bunch of other conditions that cause intellectual and/or physical impairments and disabilities.

They're insults because

No one chooses to have these disadvantaging and disabling conditions, and their/our lives are hard enough without other people slagging them/us off for characteristics over which they/we have no control.

Nobody will ever desire to be any of these things, therefore they will always be insults. Keep attacking the old terms, new ones will be spun off, because being a retard is never going to be a positive thing no matter what word you use to label 'being a retard' with.

I didn't say that having a physically or intellectually disabling condition was "a positive thing." Actually, it's a very awful, cruel, challenging and usually very lonely and impoverishing thing.

What I said is that it's been passé for 50 years at least to use slurs to demean and dehumanize people for having such conditions.

There but for the grace of god/goddess go you or I.

I hope that when you grow up a bit you show a tad more compassion. Anyone can be struck down by a traumatic brain injury, tumor, stroke or any one of a plethora of neurological conditions like MS or ALS at any time in life. Any of us can have a child with Down's or CP. Lots of people nowadays get early-onset dementia in their 50s. Many people suffer conditions like pernicious anemia and Bell's palsy. Why the need to demean and dehumanize all such people?

Look what happened to Christopher Reeve, aka Superman of movie fame. In 1995, he was the epitome of a muscular, fit, masculine, powerful, sexy, handsome, healthy, successful, virile, athletic superstar and specimen of ultra-manhood. Then he was thrown from a horse, and in an instant he at age 42 became paralyzed from the neck down. Couldn't move. Couldn't wipe his nose or ass. Initially couldn't even talk. This can happen to any of us.

I'm a person with a disabling and disfiguring neurological condition that has resulted in intellectual deficits I have to work around every day. But if you look through my post history, I think you'll find I'm far from "being a retard."

Also, this thread was started by a woman in dire straits looking for support. How is your post slagging off people you think deserve the label "retard" showing support for her?
