Best case scenario here, he was deeply in need of qualified, professional counseling for depression, but instead found a way of self-medicating and yes-men to push him into it. Which is horribly tragic. I think, if possible, you should try to have an honest discussion with him about all this, and encourage him to either go into therapy or get off of reddit/social media. Ideally both. I'm sure there are many people in the world who don't have many friends and are unhappy with their lives, even if they can't say so. Even if it's only their own perception that this is so. The trans cult provides easy answers and artificial support to them.

Thanks, I kinda have the feeling that a lot of this applies, he thinks that it will solve all his problems. I think he's going to try therapy again, finally, even though he says he's too screwed up to be helped.
