Agreed... Lots of bad messaging from media and culture. HOWEVER God damn but I hate Twitter. This hot take is BS, marriage has always been "positioned as a desire for women." ALWAYS. Historically it was the only thing women had to look forward to besides "being a mother." Marriage has evolved, culturally and legally (thank christ!). Why do you think gay people fought for the right to marry?! Marriage (a voluntary, legally protected partnership) is not in of itself bad.

Yeah, and when it comes to modern marriage, it's like straight people are forgetting (or never paid attention to) the anguish that so often resulted from same-sex marriage being illegal. I think a lot of people secretly just don't want to "have to" be there or make hard decisions if their partner is dying in the hospital, so they claim marriage is just a piece of paper instead of being honest: "I don't want us to be an actual family."

THIS. If you're dating someone and after years you say nah, I don't want to marry you... it means I don't want to declare you part of my legal family and/or I want to be able to leave anytime I want. Marriage isn't a trap, it's a feature of civilized society, one where women, gays/lesbians now have the option to take or leave these days.

I see your point, but it can be a trap. I mean, you're still taking up a legal contract that can make you liable for a lot and might prevent you from ever being able to dissociate completely from the other party if they decide to be a jerk five years from now... and we've all seen our shares of ugly divorces too. It can be a moneyhole.
