Interesting thing I noticed in these changelogs a while back:

We (@dessalines and @nutomic) have been working full-time on Lemmy for almost three years. This is largely thanks to support from NLnet foundation.

So this means Lemmy has 6 full-time developer years invested in it, hard to beat for other alternatives which are mostly developed as a hobby.

No, it's more like a federated / decentralized version of reddit. It uses the ActivityPub protocol (like Mastodon, Pleroma and others) to federate (share content) between other instances.
