Are you a residential electrician? Here's my question =

7 x a week I go through exact same morning routine when I roll out of bed and about 5th step is to go to kitchen, turn on light switch and make my daily coffee. Perplexing question = when I flip switch then light do not come on at all for a span of 6-7 seconds then come on. Lights are not florescent tubes they are just bulb lights plain and simple. Why would there consistently be a time delay" My understanding is a switch for lights is on or off there is no warm up period.

Are you sure the bulbs are not compact fluorescents?

The electric field travels through the wire at the speed of light, so there'll be like a billionth of a quadrillionth of a nanosecond delay before it hits the bulbs, unless your wiring travels all the way around the world.

If they are old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs, it takes some milliseconds for the filament to heat up enough to start glowing, the time is too short for human perception to notice but it does exist.

LED lights are all over the place, depends on how they are made, but even the cheap and nasty ones should have no more delay than a blink -- enough to notice, but not 6 or 7 seconds. I suppose that it's possible that somebody has made, and installed, special-purpose LED lights with a delay, but I can't imagine why anyone would do it.

What happens if you swap the bulb for a brand new one?

Maybe it's an LED bulb with faulty circuitry. At any rate, I would change the bulb to prevent a fire hazard. You could test the light socket with a multimeter and see if you get between 110 to 120 volts when the light switch is flicked.

Like others have said, check the bulb to see if it is fluorescent or LED. If you rule that out, it could be a connectivity issue anywhere along the line; from the breaker, to the switch, to the light fixture, to the socket and bulb. If it is a loose wire connection, it will most likely be in the neutral (the white wire if you're in the U.S.). If you are having light flickering in other places, or lights brighter or dimmer than normal, it could be a loose connection in your incoming neutral line from.
