need to know a lot more. who do i fight with, what is their training? how far away am i? what training does the gunman have?
what is the lighting conditions? what kind of gun? how big is my knife?

Yeah, exactly. If the gunman is likely to kill one or two of us, I'm in. If he's reasonably likely to kill us all, I'm out.
