I've already said that I personally don't think its likely that the US political system has become so corrupt that either side will just outright ignore the law if the election goes against them. But it's definitely a possibility. January 6 was an insurrection like my ass is an oil tanker, but the losing side (or at least influential elements of that side) has accused the winning side of election fraud in at least five of the last six presidential elections.

The entire Trump presidency was characterised by individuals and agencies subverting his orders and trying to undermine his presidency, including the FBI and the military.

One Democrat think-tank openly wargamed scenarios involving violence following the election, and even suggested that California, Oregon and Washington might secede from the Union if Bush won.

Other Democrat-aligned groups openly celebrated what they themselves called a conspiracy to keep Donald Trump out of the Whitehouse.

American democracy is on very think ice, and the problem isn't Trump.

(Not that he's the solution.)
