What OS do you guys use?
submitted 4 years ago by [deleted] from (self.AskSaidIt)
I just recently switched from Windows to Arch-based Manjaro distro and I'm surprised by the performance I get in games, GTA V runs smooth on medium settings for example.
I'm curious what you guys use as I'm sure most of you don't trust Microsoft.

Netscape. Alta Vista is my search. I moved to Google for a bit but they seem like they're pushing a narriative.

Linux Mint. Kinda vanilla, but I've been on it for 7 or 8 years solid, and I'm happy with it. Always glad to see the Linux ranks growing.

Didn't Canonical install spyware into Ubuntu? Seems like it's becoming another Windows.
[–]curious_fatbastard 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun - 4 years ago (2 children)
I sincerely doubt any such claims. Keep in mind, Deepin Linux was actually injecting Chinese spyware and they got caught and rectified everything. I doubt if a company like Canonical would choose to die on this hill (given they are pretty nice in general).

The spyware in question was for Amazon, they tried to monetize the OS by providing search queries for the giant.

I was very happily running a heavily customized windows 7 build, which I painstakingly migrated to my Ryzen system. And then it stopped working.
So now, cringe, sigh, I run windows 10. I wish I could Linux, but it doesn't look like it's happening.

Haha! Don't get me started on how many times I reinstalled my windows, I even tried linux many times before but it didn't do it with the games.
But now, it's a winner. I can use this DXVK to run windows DirectX games in Vulkan which boosts the performance from nothing to maybe better than windows.

Not sure if you know but there is Windows 10 LTSC/LTSB
It is official windows without w10 shit like cortana, metro aps, microsoft store.
Just clean windows.
It is part of windows enterprise. I use it for all computers at work. And at home.

Yeah I don't use the whole windows 10 thing, I got a respected website's "turn off Win 10 spying" app to tune it.
It's still shitty as all hell to have to ditch 7. Windows 7 just plain WORKS.

Giving a shoutout to my pal Qubes+Whonix. Moving away from Windows is very good, but that only removes most of the spying from the box you're using. When every network packet you send and receive is captured as soon as they leave your device, you're almost back to square one, sadly. And that's where the Whonix part comes in.

Pop! OS(Ubuntu-based) with Gnome 3. Works great and I'm quite pleased with it. I've been using Linux for 18 years now and I get irritated whenever I have to use Windows. Is it the updates forcing themselves whenever you boot or shut down the computer or the diagnosis/troubleshooting program that never has a solution for the actual problem or how sluggish and bloated it is? Though Linux isn't without its caveats, at least I feel like I have control over my computer.
I think one of the most annoying things on Windows is the trash programs leave behind on these hidden folders, after months of use, it becomes a pile of trash that's hidden everywhere.

I use Debian with TDE on my main computer, and for the rest, Manjaro with XFCE.
I started the transition around 2007-8, mainly because of Microsoft supporting DRM. But there's a long story on that which I won't get into here for now.
