Nonsense, 4 out of top 10 countries according to world press freedom index are EU countries.

Fedora exclusively for the last 2 years.

In terms of DE originally Gnome, lately XFCE, however with version 31 coming out soon I'm thinking of jumping to KDE since they are doing working with performance lately

The great thing about the protocol is the sheer amount of developers supporting it. I have no doubt you'll be able to get help for the implementation when you get to it.
