It will require guidance, benevolent or not.

Yes, it is a tool of humans. Like any tool, it will beneficial or harmful depending on how it is wielded. If it is used in a very specific, scientific way, it can use data/trends/patterns/etc. to get answers it may take humans years or centuries to figure out. For example, AI has already suggested that there is more of what goes inside a human cell than what we currently know.
