Kazakhstan: A Demographic Recovery Story

In 1897, Kazakhs made up 73.9% of the population of what is today Kazakhstan. By 1959, that had fallen to a mere 30%. In 1959, Kazakhs were 39.7% of the population of Kazakhstan. Only 10 years later, they rose to 53.4% and by 2009, they made up 63.1% of the population. Today, it is estimated that Kazakhs make up 67.98% of the population.

How did they achieve this?

Emmigration

In 1989, Russians made up 37.8% of the population and Germans made up 5.8% of the population. After the collapse of the USSR, many Russians move to Russia and many Germans moved to either Russia or Germany. Since Russia is so close, and the Russians still knew how to speak Russian, moving back to Russia wasn’t that hard. Many immigrants in the US do not know the language of their parents’ country but the same can also be said about a not insignificant number of the Volga Germans who “returned” to Germany. There was also once a sizable Ukrainian minority in Kazakhstan as well. They made up 5.4% of the population in 1989 but it seems that many of them have left.

Differences in fertility

TFR in 1989 for Kazakhs was 3.58 and for Russians was 2.24 In 1999, Russian women in 1999, the TFR for Kazakhs was 2.5 and that for Russians was 1.38. By 2006, Russian women. Even when you have been reduced to a minority in your own country, there is still hope. Anybody who says Sweden is lost because they're only 75% Swedish is crazy. If Kazakhs can recover from being only 30% of their country's population, the Swedes can too...and so can the French, the Germans, the Dutch, the Canadians, the Australians, the Brits, and all the other members of our family. Kazakhstan didn’t even need to forcibly deport anyone. Voluntary emigration and higher birth rates are all that was necessary. Make sure you do your part. Go get married and have 4 or more children.
