I'm wondering if most of the Bud Light boycotters don't care about Dylan Mulvaney per se, but they don't want to be made fun of by other Bud Light drinkers in social situations, and it's pretty easy to just by Coors Light instead, so they take the safer route.

Right. The difference between using "they" when you don't know the person's sex and using "they" when you are only pretending not to know the person's sex is THE difference "they" won't acknowledge.

I try to use language that will bridge the communication gap with the person I am talking to, so that I can get my ideas across with as few barriers as possible. So, yes, this sometimes includes using the word "transwoman" if that is the vocabulary the other person will understand the most easily.
