Interesting thread. My theory is that there is some zero-day javascript vulnerability that was discovered and used by someone to hack a bunch of sites that all use it. Looks like a huge mess, and tons of sites only have partial connectivity (pictures won't load, or one login won't work), which is very strange.

It's interesting compared with Venezuela having their power just go out... and I just had a power guy come by my house randomly today asking to inspect the smart meter for corrosion. Took him 30 seconds, shut off my power for 2 seconds, says I'm good for another 3-5 years. Didn't think much of it but in combination with the Venezuela outage and all these websites having outages, I have to wonder.

This much disrupted electrical activity, and malfunctioing servers across many websites, seems like a solar storm event to me, because that's exactly what would happen if we had a huge solar storm. But solarham.com says everything is clear and silent coming from space. So I guess unless solarham is faking data, it's coming from Earth. Which means it was probably a hack.

Heck I guess probably even the smart meter runs javascript or something. Maybe the electrician was uploading new firmware to prevent against this hack. Or maybe it's unrelated and I'm connecting things that are just coincidence.

But all these huge internet companies having partial server outages at once is extremely strange. It has to either be a space radiation event, or some type of hack. I can't imagine anything else that would affect so many huge internet companies simultaneously.

It's also interesting it only seems to be affecting the big companies. Saidit hasn't been affected at all. That also points to a hack rather than a geomagnetic storm.

I don't see why a solar storm would mess up some websites like facebook but not the entire internet

Yeah you're right. It has to have been human-caused to only affect certain big websites, but not most of all websites on the internet.

We are at the low point in the eleven-year sunspot cycle so solar storms are very unlikely. BTW, Apple's Messenger seems to be working just fine.

solar storm.

wipe evidence from servers and blame the cme!

also, time to upgrade skynet

"They" know where you live.

Maybe all the corporate sites share similar resources. That big NSA factory in the desert? Maybe it went down for a bit.

"They" claim the NSA records everything. Maybe not. Maybe they only record the big stuff and there was a hair in their fiber optic splitter.

PSA: The Fediverse didn't have this issue. https://switching.social/

in the light of recent events i think it was because of the nz shooting

what about it though? You think all these websites are being externally attacked because they're just talking about the fact the shooting happened? Who would be motivated to do that?

[–]useless_aether 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

no, i mean its the sites themselves, not an external attack.

liveleak is also down, to stop spreading the video

but weren't the website outages happening before the nz shooting happened?

Were they practicing for a future event that just happened to come 12 hours later? Seems weird

uh, yes that would be a stretch. i dont know when the shooting happened relative to the outages..

[–]magnora7[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think the outages were about 12-24 hours before the shooting based on what I was seeing

Maybe a live exploit got reported for Spoiler and google and fb got the early tip off. or they were offered a fix. this just came out 3/5/19 so speculating purely by the timeline https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPOILER_(vulnerability)

Interesting.
