In the past people only kept what was useful.

The Phoenicians were navigators so learned to map the stars and took that knowledge with them wherever they went.

However once land based empires gained power they subjugated those people, they took only the knowledge which was useful.

Also the Phoenicians used to sacrifice babies by burning them alive so they weren't much liked in the ancient world.

Well, there is an non-mainstream version of the Genesis story known as The Book of Enoch that expanded on who the Nephilim were. They were called "the Watchers" and they taught mankind various forms of technology that ultimately corrupted human civilization.

Perhaps this is an ancestral memory of an advanced race of hominids teaching survival methods to early humans?
