For whatever it's worth for him, those encounters are supposed to be hallucinations of Max speaking with his own human consciousness and reason.

Gameplay was pretty fun, specially the vehicular combat. I hated the story though.

It was kind of tragic, but it's not bad if you consider it a prequel to Fury Road, in which Max comes to terms with his humanity again. That's my headcanon either way.
