Vietnam memorial was done by a Chinese woman (war was really against China). She just had a design for two black walls (monolith). Anyone could have come up with that. Architects say they are into minimalism just because it's easy. Realistic sculptures are much harder.
Years later she helps choose the winner of the 9/11 memorial completion. Israeli Michael Arad gets chosen. They like using symbolism like this with an enemy architect.
The memorial is called Reflecting Absence. They have black squares where the towers sat. Dug into the earth and black like the Vietnam one. Black rock. Mecca.
There was eye symbolism in 1998 in the subway near the WTC called oculus. Now there's a big eye shaped building at the memorial. Called Oculus. Artists and architects love eye symbolism.

The millennium Hilton building is across the street from the WTC memorial and it looks like a monolith facing it.
