There are different ways to interpret the scene. A lot of people could say that Cypher is nihilistic because he is choosing The Matrix over the real world and they have a point, but other way to interpret Cypher's nihilism and that it applies to a lot of people nowadays is his irresponsibility.
While a lot of mystics see the material world as corrupt and glorify the supernatural, to me a better way to interpret ethics is our role in history and responsibilities with others. I see the ultimate reality as having the material world, the mind of God/Root and the afterlife as all being part of it, instead of just glorifying the supernatural like a lot of people do.
