Speaking of diversity... this is your reminder that:

  • about 25% of English words are derived from Latin;
  • another 25% come from Germanic languages (mostly Anglo-Saxon, also some Jute and Frisian);
  • another 25% come from Norman-French and Picard (no, not the space ship captain, the language);
  • about 10% comes from Greek;
  • and another 10% or so from Old Norse, spoken by Vikings (Danish and Norwegian).

The remaining 5% or so comes from all over the world, especially Yiddish, Indian and Chinese.

You will notice that practically no English words are derived from the original Brittonic languages spoken by the Picts and other early Britons.

Diversity. What's it good for? Apart from 100% of the language we speak.

English is probably the most diverse language in the world.

Why do you hate yourself and your people so much? You should get some help.

I certainly don't hate myself, and I don't know who you think "my people" are. I don't hate them -- I'm disappointed and frustrated and rather resigned to the fact that 80% of people are arseholes at the best of times.

There's something disturbing about folks who think that being honest about people means "you hate your people". Being honest isn't self-hatred, and there is nothing admirable about lying to yourself about what shits most people are.
