Exactly. I remember as a kid once grumbling that I wished I was black so I could be special. Being white(...ish) I was just... Nothing.

Of course as an adult (hell, even as a kid slightly older than that) I realize that's stupid, but kids are still learning how to think.

Did you grow up in a city? In my city, pretty much everyone want to be black. Whiggers and chiggers were the norm, not the exception.

Perhaps you're seeing their interest in black culture or music as a something more than their basic interest.

Complete replication of their dress and language is not really interest in culture. Especially calling each other "nigga" and pretending to be in gang, despite being from the burbs. It was cringe af. I mean, that's where the terms "whiggers" and "chigger" came from.
