Otherwise they would recognize the signs of the times instead of disbelieving. They would want to be different from the world rather than fit in. Their values would be biblical rather than stereotypically Christian.
They want to believe, because if they actually believed they would be different people. They keep trying to believe, or convince themselves or others they believe. It’s more of a sociological thing than desire to relate to Ultimate Reality.
