Although Edison didn't invent the movie camera—his employee did—he was quite happy to take credit for it. He set the price of his patents so high and the toughs he hired to enforce it that would-be filmmakers fled to Cucamonga, CA, later to become Hollywood. It had great sunlight and was near the Mexican border where they would hide if Edison's ruffians were on the way. I hope this was not in the linked article.

I heard similar stories before, but I suggest you take them with a huge grain of salt. It sounds like typical Hollywood slander to me.
