That's an incredibly ignorant take. Religion has done a lot to quell men's evil desires. It is evil morons who turn around and blame the evil actions of people on religion.

I'm just going to leave this here:

Religion has been used to excuse and encourage all sorts of heinous shit over the millennia.

It's not all bad, but it's bad enough to make me want to avoid it.

Non religious excuses have been used even more. Communism, for example.

Just because someone says religion made them do it doesn't mean that is true.

Communism is a religion.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Non-religious acts of evil do not justify or excuse religious acts of evil. I regard communism as evil, as I do religions. I also agree that communism has many traits seen in religions and can be considered comparable. Quite simply, many religious evils are accepted in society simply because they are religious in nature, such as genital mutilation in Judaism or the systematic abuse of women under Islam.

Strawman argument. The claim that religion cases acts of evil is disproven by non-religious acts of evil.

I regard communism as evil, as I do religions

You are blaming the tools and not the person who wields them.

Quite simply, many religious evils are accepted in society

Perhaps we should consider the good and the bad together. Jewish ritual mutilation serves other purposes. It would take a lot of philosophical thought and discussion to truly have an intelligent opinion on it.

systematic abuse of women under Islam.

For the sake of argument consider the following.. One could easily argue that the precipitous fall of the west started with feminism and suffrage. Muslim countries are shit places to live for everyone. If women's liberation can destroy the west there is no telling what it would do to the middle east.

It's not a strawman argument. Non-religious people do not commit acts on behalf of their non-belief, but if I ask you has any person committed an act of evil on behalf of their god, the answer is obvious. How many suicide bombers believe they are going to paradise for having fulfilled Allah's wishes? How many wars have been fought because one belief is allegedly superior to another?

[–][deleted] 0 insightful - 1 fun0 insightful - 0 fun1 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

I don't think that's true. There have certainly been more religious people than communists throughout the ages. Billions more.

And if evil people can use religion as an excuse, couldn't they also use communism (or whatever) as an excuse? By your logic, it wouldn't be communism's fault.

[–]Canbot 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

There have also been many people throughout history who have done good in the name of religion. I think any rational analysis of Christianity would find that it is on the whole a good thing.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Yes to the first part, strongly disagree with the second.

"On the whole," I think Christianity has done more harm than good. Too much bloodshed and abuse and hysteria. I think there are better alternatives.

[–]Canbot 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

I think there has been a lot of slander pushed against christians by leftists because Christianity has stood in the way of thier degeneracy, and also by jews who historically hate Christianity but also because want to push society in a radically leftist agenda. I think you fell for that.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

You could then argue that there is a lot of slander toward atheists by Christians and Muslims. Did you know atheism is considered religious extremism in Dubai, some have been sentenced to death there. The late Christopher Hitchens did well to dismantle much of the dogmatic bullshit surrounding the purity of religion, all religion. Good deeds are done by individuals who happen to be religious, and they may even do it in the name of religion, but the religious organisations and establishments have known history of evil deeds. It's even written down in the religious texts. Sodomy, murder, rape, slavery, genocide, etc. It's all there. The left are ideologically corrupt just as the church is.

Yes, there certainly is.

Did you know atheism is considered religious extremism in Dubai,

I did not, but am not surprised. I am opposed to all religious extremism and that includes hard core rhetoric like that.

The left are ideologically corrupt just as the church is.

The solution should be separation of church and state.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

At the very least there should be separation of church from the state, I'd go further and relinquish any special rights religion has that overrides any right the non-religious have, and any right of those who are not of consenting age. Nobody has the right to force religion on young people, ideologically or physically.

[–][deleted] 0 insightful - 1 fun0 insightful - 0 fun1 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

My parents were Christian fundamentalists, and they were horribly abusive because of that. My aversion to Christianity stems from personal experience, not politics. I'm certain my childhood would've been a lot more enjoyable if my parents hadn't been Christians.

[–]Canbot 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Or they would have found another excuse to be abusive.

[–][deleted] 0 insightful - 1 fun0 insightful - 0 fun1 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Maybe, maybe not. All I know is that the Bible's got a lot of psychotic nonsense in it. If you take it literally, like fundamentalists do, you're not gonna have a good time. And neither is anyone around you.
