I remember hearing about this on Science Fridays about 10 years ago.

The increased resilience in the electrode also allows for significant reductions in recharge times, but the electrodes would need to increase in size to accommodate the extra current.

My guess is that the recharge time reduction is the actual goal. Planned obsolescence and all...
