I've been through the same experience as the author. The way people are describing Web 2.0 is revisionist and erroneous. Web 2.0 was quite specifically and concretely about AJAX. You can legitimately expand that a little and say that Web 2.0 was about "rich" client-side experiences, and that it was the point in time when VBScript on the Web finally died, and maybe throw tagging in there as well, but Web 2.0 was about 95% XMLHttpRequest, and that's that. It had fuck all to do with "social media data trapped in silos" or WordPress or whatever.

Not sure why we're being fed the revisionist bullshit, but it's probably sinister.
